This is an exhibition catalogue for Reverberation from the Universe. From an early age, Kusama has been struggling with visual and auditory hallucinations. Mental illness has had a profound effect on her creative process. Beginning with her early drawings, through to her “happenings” during her time in the United States, soft sculpture, small works created in the hospital, and culminating in large paintings and inflatables, these works can be seen as traces of Kusama's struggle with illness.

This exhibition introduces the fruits of her creative power, alongside related materials and poetry. Kusama's unique artistic philosophy, “self-obliteration,” seeks the simultaneous salvation of herself and others from illness. This philosophy remains deeply embedded in her works to this day.
